Japanese Woodworking in NYC

Schedule & Location

Get Connected

We are a growing group of woodworkers in the New York City area, interested in the tools and techniques used in the Japanese tradition.

Some of us are well into our journey. Others are just getting started or maybe just starting to get curious. Maybe we have projects we’re making or are dreaming up a project we hope to start soon. We might be hobbyists or professionals. Many of us don’t even speak Japanese. As a group we reflect all the diversity of age, culture, ethnicity, and gender that our city already brings together.  What we all share is a passion for these tools, the practice of using them, and the culture of care and patience they foster. You might think “Really? A hand plane, saw or chisel can inspire all this?” Well, come see for yourself.

Together, we’ll make sense of all the nuances this practice can reveal, and tackle the specific joys and challenges of Japanese Woodworking in NYC.

We meet on the second Thursday of every month from 6–8pm.
Next meetup: August 13th, 2026

The meetup will be hosted at Nihonsan Tools. Join the mailing list to stay in the loop.

Will has been an avid woodworker and advocate for Japanese tools and methods for the past decade. Apart from running his own one-man woodworking business and teaching classes in the Japanese woodworking tradition, he also plays guitar and sings in an acoustic cover band.

“By far the most meaningful lessons that wood has to teach us are humility and patience. Trees are impressively large, long-lived beings who will dutifully give us a good whack whenever we naively assume that we have it all under control.”
