Ok! For those that could not make it to the meetup you are forgiven and here is a clip introducing William Watkins to you all. He is our vintage Japanese tool guy, and restored and supplied Nihonsan with its new stock of used tools! At the meetup folks got to see and learn about a wide range of tools and how to restore/maintain them. Whether you met him and want to know more, or couldn't make it and want to see what the fuss is all about, fear not!
He will be here at the shop this week during the hours below, so stop by to meet him, chat about tools, see our new collection of restored Japanese vintage tools for sale, get your tools looked at, and more. He will be cutting plane blocks, sharpening and setting saws, sharpening planes and chisels, making saw horses, and a lot more. He also brought a bit of his collection of books on Japanese tools and some very old tools he will be taking back home with him, so be sure to visit him at Nihonsan at these times:
- Sunday May 11, 12 pm - 5 pm
- Monday May 12, 12 pm - 5 pm
- Tuesday May 13, 12 pm - 5 pm
- Wednesday May 14, 12 pm - 5 pm
- Thursday May 15th, 11 am - 2 pm
Spoon Carving - a lot of folks have asked about Japanese wood carving, especially spoons. Nihonsan has a number of carving tools and sets available, and for those interested in spoons specifically you should definitely check out the NYC Spoon Club! They meet monthly just a few blocks from Nihonsan and are a great bunch of folks.
Makeville tool swap and scrap sale - Makeville Studio (a great woman-owned community woodworking shop two blocks from Nihonsan) will be holding a scrap wood sale and tool swap on Saturday May 31st from 9 am - 12 pm. Nihonsan will be there selling tools and their scrap hardwood is usually a great deal, but be sure to get there early as it goes quickly. And bring your hand or power tools that you don't need anymore to swap or sell to someone else!
Previous announcements:
Maine Japanese Woodworking Festival - July 24 - 28 - register now! Nihonsan Tools will be there selling tools and more, and it is an incredible opportunity to meet a ton of folks and learn a lot. Any questions or if you want to go and need (or can offer!) a ride just let us know.
Books. We now have books for sale at Nihonsan! In addition to the few we have stocked up to now, we now have 7 more English language titles available for purchase. Most of them are already on the website and the rest will be shortly. Of course they are available in the shop anytime.
Vintage tools! As of this week we will be carrying a wide range of vintage Japanese hand tools. These tools range from needing work to totally restored and ready to go. These are handmade tools, and so they are for people up to the challenge of learning how to use a higher level tool, or those who already know how. A great opportunity to dive deeper into Japanese woodworking. William Watson, who is our vintage tool guy, will be at the shop for the meetup tomorrow and for about a week after so stop by and talk with him to learn more when we are open!
