...and I had an idea.
It has been 6 months since we opened Nihonsan Tools and Hardware (thanks everyone for all the love and support!), and a lot longer than that since I last visited Japan. Most of you have heard us talk about the Japanese annual woodworking festival and competition - the Kezuroukai. You can check out the US version here.
Anywho, the Japanese Kez is coming up this April, and I had a crazy/brilliant thought the other day. Since opening the shop I knew I would have to/get to travel back to Japan occasionally to meet our vendors and tool makers, shop, and more. And this is when a funny thing happened. A thought popped into my head - a vision of an all-inclusive, privately-led tour of Japanese woodworking.
Led by me. In Japan.
Starting next year I want to make this a reality - for those who want a quick but in-depth experience of Japan through the lens of woodworking I will be offering a small group Japan trip to those interested. I have started working on logistics, cost, and more, and will share details as they develop.
BUT THEN, things snowballed in my head...as they tend to do. The next Japanese Kez is THIS APRIL, the 12th and 13th, in the Western Japanese region of Kansai, a small little town called Osaka. Maybe you've heard of it ;)
In all seriousness, I am contemplating a last-minute 5 day whirlwind tour of Japanese woodworking, and I am wondering if anyone is interested in joining me. I have contacts in Japan setting up all the logistics, which will include both days of the Japanese Kez of course, a trip to the Japanese Woodworking Museum, and visits to toolmakers, tool shops, and more. Additionally, if there is anything you want to do whether it is your 1st or 50th time in Japan, I can help set that up. FYI I lived in Japan for about 5 years and am relatively fluent in the language.
For me this would be 1) fun and 2) a great trial run for the tours I want to start up next year.
So. If you are interested, have questions or feedback, or anything else, please let me know asap - you can email me at info@nihonsantools.com or call the shop at 929-724-4027 to chat or for more info.
Anyone game?!
